About

Being There? was a field broadcast workshop series by SNU Visiting Fellow, Dr Nicholas Ferguson, Department of Art, Media and Performance. January 17 – February 1, 2024. Following the workshops, in 2025, the project went on to form the basis of a further field broadcast collaboration between Nick Ferguson, Gitanjali Poluru, Nasir Sheikh, and Aditi Suneija. The broadcast event, ‘There is a Hole in My Bucket’, took place between Delhi and Durham (UK) as part of Reimagining Climate (Im)mobilities in the Panicocene. 8-9 May 2025Durham University. A critical reflection on the event was incorporated into the edited volume Bailey, R (Ed.). 2026. Cultures of Climate. University of Huddersfield Press. The documentation on this page relates to both the 2024 and 2025 broadcasts.

Curatorial Statement

The poetic imagination of the artist has been at the centre of a global community. It has played a key role in international collaboration and exchange, creating alternative, counter-hegemonic models of participation and new spaces in which to do so. As unchecked growth continues to bring ecosystems to a tipping point, the presence of the artist on the international stage is more important than ever. But what would happen if artists were unable to travel? How, for example, might they contribute to climate change debates across continents under the conditions of ‘net zero’ or stricter bordering regimes? This three-day workshop series responds to these questions through an exploration of the field-broadcast medium. Taking advantage of the multiple methods at art’s disposal, and proceeding in a resolutely experimental spirit, we will develop ways of communicating environmental knowledge across time and space.
